How many times have you started a resolution and get extremely excited because “this is your year to finally commit,” Sound familiar? Often, people start with great intentions but there is a disconnection between the goal and the action items along the way.

Over and over again goals are set with high expectations and become over complicated without a clear process on how to truly achieve that goal. “I want to be healthier, I want to be thinner, I need to work out, I should eat more fruits and vegetables, I want to learn how to cook.” These are great statements to get your mind thinking, but they won’t get you far. How can you make those goals achievable for your life TODAY? Shifting your mindset to think of what is simple and will fit with your lifestyle is exactly what you need to make sure that you can achieve success!

Here are a few tips and tricks to get started RIGHT so that your goals will be achieved with ease.

•Focus on TODAY. Ask yourself “what do I need to do TODAY to accomplish what I am wanting to achieve?” ie., Today, I need to get in 30 minutes of exercise and make good food choices.

•K.I.S.S. Keep it simple sweetie. Pick ONE thing to tackle. Today, I am going to each a vegetable for morning and afternoon snack.

•Find a buddy. Everything is more fun with a friend. If you have someone to meet or check in with daily, your chances of success increase dramatically.

•Create a vision board. This can be made up of words or pictures that are motivating to you. It is healthy for our mind to be able to visualize part of the goal.

•Become a creature of habit. Don’t overwhelm yourself with 10 new recipes and 3 new workouts for the week. Try 2 new recipes and 1 new workout. As you start slow, you will find what works and what doesn’t.

•If finding time to exercise is your number one goal, find something you love to do. Exercise should be enjoyable! Try a fitness class, home DVD, outdoor hiking or yoga. There are thousands of options. You have the power to choose what is best for your body.

•Food prep and healthy snacks might be your biggest challenge. Purchase veggie trays and pre-cut fruit. You might pay a few extra dollars, but it is better that you consume it all than have some thrown out.

No matter where you are on your wellness journey, the most important thing to do is to not give up. Give yourself some grace and know there will be good days and bad. Keep it simple and find foods and exercise you enjoy. If you are able to focus on the daily short term goals, you will be that much closer to your ultimate goal.
