Many, including myself, would much rather be active in the great outdoors during the warmer months. However, that doesn’t mean that outdoor recreation can’t be just as fun during the long, drawn out winter. As a Wisconsin native, cold weather is something that I have half-heartedly convinced myself for years that I am used to, but am I really? Being completely honest, I am not sure the frigid winter temperatures of the great lakes region is ever something one truly gets used to but rather likely puts up with. For this reason, over the course of the past 6 years I have contemplated many times moving somewhere with milder winters, preferably the Southwest or West coast for its sheer, natural beauty. Believe it or not, there are many great ways to be active during the winter months without having to relocate. Here are some of the ways that I plan, and encourage you, to be active outdoors this winter:

Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is an excellent winter alternative to trail hiking! Most snowshoes are pretty light which makes it very easy to trek around snow covered terrain. If you prefer familiarity, strap on a pair of snowshoes and invite a few friends to join you on your usual Spring, Summer, Fall route. Looking up new trails to explore is my personal favorite option for snowshoeing but either way, make sure to get out there and give it a try!

Cross-Country Skiing
Cross-country skiing is personally most enjoyable on designated trails. Similar to snowshoeing, XC skiing doesn’t require a certain skill level for you to be able to enjoy yourself. While gliding along snowy trails, take notice of the silence and beauty of the nature around you. This is definitely one of the most calming activities to do during the winter.

Ice skating
Whether a casual ice skater or one looking for a local learn-to-skate class, there are plenty of lakes and ice rinks around to start skating. Ice skating can be a great idea for a date or can even be something to do with friends or family. Most rinks and lakes have a welcoming atmosphere which makes it comfortable for all. In addition, lake skating is free!

Don’t let a lack of resources stand in your way. All of these activities typically have rentals available throughout the winter season at various locations!

Adventure on!
